When’s the last time you used a book to research a subject? A map to travel? A payphone to make a call? The past 20 years have held unprecedented technological advances; we’ve seen pricey, lethargic dial-up internet turn into innumerable free Wi-Fi hotspots. Colorless, bulky cell phones have turned into sleek smart phones that keep us connected everywhere we go.

Technology has impacted every aspect of our lives, especially our work lives. We can communicate with colleagues who are oceans away. We can work from anywhere there’s an Internet connection. It’s also made many jobs safer and more automated.

For Barrick Gold, a Canadian mining company with operations spanning several continents, safety and productivity are paramount. It wanted to adopt technologies that increase efficiency through data insight, while also improving safety with tele-remote mining via a secure, wireless network. By partnering with Cisco, Barrick has not only accomplished these goals, but is changing mining as we know it.

With a Cisco wireless solution, Barrick has been able to connect its entire mine. From the mine operators to the equipment and ore, Barrick has gained real-time visibility into its operations, which has provided them with the insight to improve its business. For example, maintenance teams were alerted to low engine oil pressure, which allowed them to conduct preventative repairs, saving 72 hours of downtime and a potential $500,000 engine replacement. By connecting the entire mine to a wireless network, Barrick is ensuring the safety of its miners. It minimizes the amount of time miners spend underground with tele-remote and autonomous technology.

In addition, these solutions have substantially boosted the mine’s productivity. With the insights from data, one site even gained 33 minutes of additional active production time per day, which adds up to a throughput gain of 198 tons.

Technology has changed everything for Barrick. Thanks to Cisco solutions, the company has hugely boosted its productivity, while making their employees safer. (READ MORE). And they’re better prepared to embrace the new technological advances of tomorrow. Twenty years ago, this wasn’t possible. For Barrick, harnessing the power of technology is pure gold.
